Institution und Ziele
"Ciudad Saludable", übersetzt in etwa "gesunde" Stadt ist eine non-profit Organisation in Peru. Die Organisation hat sich auf die Bereiche Umweltmanagement, Müllentsorgung/Rycling spezialisiert. Das zentrale Anliegen von Ciudad Saludable ist, die Qualität der Lebensbedingungen nachhaltig für die Bevölkerung zu verbessern. Bei diesem Projekt handelt es sich um eine Privat-Initiative von Peruanisch-Amerikanische Ärzten, die bei  Iquitos, Peru mit den Bewohnern von 5 abgelegenen Dörfern  (the forgotten people of the Rio Momon) eine Gesundheits-Kooperative gründeten;  www. selvainaction.org.

Im Juli 2011 haben wir dort den Aufbau von Mutter-Kind-Gruppen  angeregt und mit einer INCA Spende  finanziell unterstützt. The Peruvian Amazon Health Cooperative, a program of
the Peruvian American Medical Society, best known now as
“Selva in Action”, continues with its mission to sustain the
health cooperative, improve access to health care, promote
health and education and to create economic opportunities for
the people living along the Rio Momón in the Peruvian Amazon
jungle.

The year of 2011 has been productive and many
accomplishments were realized: the number of villages that
participate in the project increased from six to eight. Meetings
of the regular members have increased to twice a month,
while the leadership continues to meet on a monthly basis. The
cooperative also held its second board election and they were
successful in doubling the membership fees from 5 to 10 soles
per month which indicates that the membership is recognizing
the potential benefits the cooperative provides to the
members of the community. A bimonthly raffle has increased
the monthly fund‑raising income by 150 soles. The Cooperative
continued to make improvements to the clinic building which
now has its own electric generator donated by Dr. Raúl Felipa,
and the donated Ambulance Boat is also fully operational.
More importantly, the cooperative now is able to pay for a
physician to hold a monthly clinic and since last December
they also receive the services of a dentist. The cooperative
has begun to purchase medications for its members and has
completed a 2 month training for health promoters.

The Mother and Child Project is an interesting new
program. It started by getting together focus groups of women
and, through discussion, to learn indirectly about their needs.
One of the issues that surfaced was related to domestic
violence against the women and towards their children.
The next step will center on developing a reliable support
network, allowing the women to meet without threatening the
men, giving the women a chance not only to voice their own
health concerns as well as those of their children, but also to
empower them and give them self confidence, thus the idea
of the Mother/Child Program. The next step would be to enlist
support of the men as leaders, husbands, fathers and brothers.
This program was founded by a German organization (INCA).
The goals for the period of 2012‑2013 will be to continue
to shift all aspects of the clinic responsibilities to the clinic
Board and members, to expand the Mother/Child program,
training midwifes for prenatal, birth, and post natal care, and
to develop the following programs: a micro‑loan project for
co‑op medical supplies in all villages, a program of financial
training for co‑op Board members and all interested members,
an operational manual and budget for ambulance operation,
a communication system, and clean water project for all co‑op
communities. To be able to support these established and new
programs, including the services of a part time administrative
staff, Selva in Action needs to raise approximately $20,000 per
year.
Selva in Action will host its annual fundraising event on
June 16th, at the home of Dr. Robert Young. The Wine Tasting
event will include Peruvian Cuisine, music, and Indigenous art
for sale and auction

Aus den insgesamt  „23 communities  > 18 mestizo & 5 indigenous“ <  wurden 1.180  Dörfler von unserem Team untersucht, beraten und behandelt. Das waren fast doppelt so viele wie letztes Jahr. Möglich wurde diese Steigerung durch die erstmalig enorme Unterstützung anderer lokaler Institutionen, die uns mit Personal und Material zur Seite standen

Zusätzlich konnten wir ein Volontariat für mehrere fortgeschrittene Student*innen der Medizin bzw Sozialwissenschaften aus anderen Teilen Perus ermöglichen. Das bringt uns einen großen Schritt voran im Bereich Bildung.  Es gab Workshops zu:

Bedeutung der Mundhygiene bei Kindern

Auswirkungen vom Gebrauch von Mobiltelefonen auf Kinder und Jugendliche,

Prävention von häuslicher Gewalt

Teenagerschwangerschaften      

Unter den noch studierenden Teammitglieder bildete sich eine kleine Gruppe, die nach den workshops gezielte Einzelgespräche mit Müttern und jungen Frauen führte, um solides Material zu haben zur Erstellung von ‚hand-outs‘ für Multiplikatoren und leicht zu vervielfältigenden, themenbezogenen ‚flyern‘. Unser aller Fazit: Wiederholung ist wichtig!

Unser nächstes Ziel: dass unser Aufruf “for the forgotten people of the Momon” der Vergangenheit angehört.Die kontinuierlichen Zuwendungen von INCA haben viel dazu beigetragen, diesem Ziel näher zu kommen, und wir sind Euch sehr dankbar dafür
